Next stop New York?

Classic Car Weekly (UK) - - This Week - Keith Sanders, Varennes-Sur-Loire, western France

Having read your lovely, very entertaining story on the trip to California ( CCW, 12 April), I wondered if you were looking for another venue?

Many years ago, when I worked with heavy horses, Lincolnshire County Council paid for me to go to New York so that they could take some pictures.

That’s the hamlet of New York, rather than the North American one, just a bit north of the original Boston in Lincolnshire, near to RAF Coningsby, the home of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

The council snapper took photographs of me tending the horses. I had a straw in my mouth and I was wearing tatty old rustic clobber. The next photo in this feature was the Manhattan skyline – it was all part of a UK/USA promotion! Lincolnshire’s New York is very small, 150 folk at the most, with flat fields and land drains all around. Close by at Langrick is The Bubblecar Museum, and also not far away is the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre at East Kirkby – they might take you all for a runway trip in their Lancaster bomber if you mention my name and ask very nicely.

Keep up the good work and I wish I was 20 years younger and could join you!

CCW’s David Brown paused at New York, Lincolnshire, in his VW T2 Camper en route to Woodhall Spa on Drive-It Day last year.
