LOOK FOR RUST Check carefully under the carpets, and around the battery box, bulkhead and spare wheel well for rot. It’s well worth getting the car on a ramp and having a look at the chassis too, as full-on restoration is a body-off job.
IS IT A UK CAR? Plenty of US-spec cars have been repatriated on the market over the years, but the British ones have a better specification, so we’d suggest waiting. American imports can be converted to right-hand drive, but it makes more financial sense to find one with it on the right side - right!
THE INSIDE STORY Have a look at the hood for signs of rips, holes or fraying around the edges – and ask when it was last replaced. Check the cabin too for signs of damp creeping in.
