LOOK FOR RUST Check care­fully un­der the car­pets, and around the bat­tery box, bulk­head and spare wheel well for rot. It’s well worth get­ting the car on a ramp and hav­ing a look at the chas­sis too, as full-on restora­tion is a body-off job.

IS IT A UK CAR? Plenty of US-spec cars have been repa­tri­ated on the mar­ket over the years, but the Bri­tish ones have a bet­ter spec­i­fi­ca­tion, so we’d sug­gest wait­ing. Amer­i­can imports can be con­verted to right-hand drive, but it makes more fi­nan­cial sense to find one with it on the right side - right!

THE IN­SIDE STORY Have a look at the hood for signs of rips, holes or fray­ing around the edges – and ask when it was last re­placed. Check the cabin too for signs of damp creep­ing in.
