Be­cause the van and pick-up are me­chan­i­cally the same as the saloon, they share all of the same weak­nesses. So don’t ex­pect the en­gine to be oil-tight; the gearchange and tim­ing chain oil seals are usu­ally the main cul­prits, and while re­place­ments can be fit­ted, don’t ex­pect them to be ef­fec­tive. Oil pres­sure should be 40psi at 3000rpm, but make all of the usual checks for oil be­ing burned. You can ex­pect to get about 70,000 miles out of an A-se­ries unit be­tween re­builds.
