The manual and automatic transmissions are as tough as the engines, although the auto should have an oil and filter change at each major service – less than £100 at a specialist. Early autos used a fluid flywheel rather than a torque convertor, so changes can be slightly lumpy, but that’s normal; if it’s notably rough between ratios, however, then further investigation will be required. Otherwise, just check for untoward noises from the back axle or signs of perished couplings and joints.
