First speeding fine car shown
The first car to get a speeding fine will be on display at The Concours of Elegance 2017 at Hampton Court Palace on 1-3 September. The 1896 Arnold Benz Motor Carriage was caught travelling at 8mph – more than four times the national speed limit – with Walter Arnold behind the wheel. He was caught by a policeman on a bicycle. The law at the time required all cars to stay below 2mph, and be led by a man on foot waving a red flag at all times. But Arnold, driving through Paddock Green in Kent, was doing neither. As a result, he was convicted of speeding and forced to pay a shilling fine, plus costs.
