Just a whine on gearboxes
In the 50 Greatest Drives ( CCW, 26 April) Richard Gunn refers to the ‘clutch’ on the Riley Kestrel – a common error among journalists driving cars with pre-select ‘boxes. Another recent article on a preselect car described ‘letting the clutch in gently while pulling smoothly away’ – not recommended.
Pre-select cars generally do not have a clutch, but they do have a gear change pedal which is used to engage gears whether stationary or on the move – the only pedal used when pulling away should be the accelerator. Rob North, Durham
