1974-1983 GOLF MKI
WHY WE LOVE IT It’s fun to drive, practical, and still an affordable classic
At long last Volkswagen introduced its gamechanger – a sharp design penned by Giugiaro with a distinctive interior and a transverse fourcylinder water-cooled engine. No wonder the public quickly took the Golf to its heart. Come to think of it, plenty of us still love it today!
The handling and performance were great and even the post-1978 diesels proved to be better than we could possibly have hoped (yes, there was a time when diesel cars were seen as a good thing!).
Prices for Golf MkIs are shifting but you can still find some reasonably-priced cars if you don’t leap for the first one you see – five-door models are particularly good value. GTIs are great but are now seen as precious – and therefore expensive – commodities. BUYING TIPS
Check for oil and filter changes (every 5000 miles) plus cambelt changes (every four years/40,000 miles).
If you consider buying a modified/lowered car, be sure the work has been done properly and safely. You can reverse someone else’s individuality – it can be done!
Parts and club support are excellent, and joining the MkI Golf Owners Club is a good move because members may be able to help source you a good car.
