We can safely say that the Austin-Healey 100/4 has passed its Five Tri­als and can be ac­cused only of be­ing a highly de­sir­able mo­tor car. It wasn’t a hastily con­ceived Austin/ BMC parts-bin bitsa, but a pack­age care­fully put to­gether by a bril­liant en­gi­neer us­ing ex­tremely high-qual­ity parts.

The looks are su­perb but un­der them is a sim­ple yet highly ef­fec­tive sports car that drives and han­dles beautifully, and which has a ridicu­lous amount of character.

To be hon­est, we’ve never heard any­one say any­thing neg­a­tive about th­ese cars – with one no­table ex­cep­tion. You will no longer be handed the keys af­ter pass­ing £500 into a re­luc­tant seller’s hand. Try 100 times that…
