Chiltern Hills Vintage Vehicle Rally
Last minute reprieve for Buckinghamshire’s big gathering of clubs and classics in Weedon Park
With incessant rain for a week in the run-up to the 23rd edition of the annual Chiltern Hills Vintage Vehicle Rally, including a heavy downpour the evening before, this one-day classic event near Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire was almost cancelled at the 11th hour.
However, come the morning of the event, the sun shone brightly and the queues of classic cars and commercial vehicles at the arrivals gate at Weedon Park were a reassuring sign that the rally was definitely going ahead.
The 2017 event attracted a wide variety of both and pre- and post-war classics, including a large selection of Austin Sevens and Morris 8s from the former category, as well as examples of 1930s Rolls-Royce, Alvis, Triumph, Vauxhall and Riley, with a healthy spread of early Ford Model Ts in attendance too.
Post-war highlights included a good spread of early Japanese cars, including a 1971 Toyota Corolla SR coupé and Honda N600, plus numerous Datsun 240Zs. American metal was out in force too, with plenty of 1950s and ‘60s Detroit iron, including a pair of 1959 Edsels, plus Pontiac GTOs and GMC pick-ups. Other uncommon sights included a Bedford CA Aristocrat minibus, a Facel Vega Excellence, Suzuki X-90, and three VW-Porsche 914s.
Local branches of major classic car clubs present at Aylesbury included the MG Car Club, Triumph TR club, two Ford Granada clubs, Land Rover Series 2, Porsche Club GB, plus three cars from local Lada enthusiasts.
A market and small autojumble rounded off the successful – and ultimately sunny – 23rd running of the Chiltern Hills Rally very well. Gary Axon

BELOW A distinguished rarity at Weedon Park was this striking 1958 Bedford CA Aristocrat minibus.

Proving that not every Ford of this vintage was black – this 1924 maroon Ford tourer was among the Model Ts on display.
