Value My Classic – How much is this Canadian Moggy van worth?
WHO Alan Brand WHAT 1959 Morris Minor 1000 van MILES 46,500 PROVENANCE Sold new in California MODS Later gearbox, saloon bumper HOW MANY LEFT unknown
HOW LONG HAVE YOU HAD IT?
I bought ‘Elsie’ almost three years ago in Canada for C$9900 (about £5500). It was a private sale – it popped up on my daily automated computer ‘scrape’ of North American classified ad sites for classic British cars. She had been used for eight years as a mobile ad for a sports store in Ottawa. We drove the 388 miles home in a day with no incidents but many smiles. It’s one of the few unmolested Minor vans on the road in Canada. I had a recent valuation of C$16,000 and want to check that’s correct.
HOW MUCH HISTORY?
I have a file showing most owners back to delivery in California. It’s been in Canada for ten years.
I don’t have complete paperwork but the last two owners added fewer than 3000 miles in 18 years and the condition supports the mileage showing.
WHAT’S LEFT TO DO ON IT?
Nothing! All it needs is driving.
HAS IT BEEN MODIFIED?
A ‘ribcage’ gearbox from a later 1098cc Minor was installed some time in the 1970s. It also has a full-width chrome – rather than silver-painted – front bumper with overriders from a saloon model, plus the badge bar. The stainless steel triangular finisher plates on the door window frames have been lifted from a saloon too – they would have originally been painted body colour on a van.
