I was just a year old in 1972. My fa­ther al­ways seemed to have two Vaux­hall Viva HBs – a blue sa­loon and a white es­tate – so one could be robbed for spares to make the other work. There was an un­adopted road lead­ing to our house on the Isle of Shep­pey in Kent and my dad would sit the very lit­tle me on his knee and let me hold the steer­ing wheel as he drove down it. Very slowly. De­spite this early ex­po­sure, I’ve never owned a Vaux­hall. When we later moved to Bournemouth, his al­le­giance switched to Bri­tish Ley­land.
