Richard heads up the BMW Car Club’s ‘MPower’ register. He says: ‘I remember trying an E36 M3 when they were new but it didn’t really match up to the E30 I owned at the time, so I cancelled my order. Then about four years ago a club member was selling a 3.0-litre version which I subsequently bought, and have since become a convert.

‘ The car in the picture is a 1996 3.2 coupé that I bought about 18 months ago at auction; I still have the 3.0 but wanted to keep the mileage down. It had covered just 60,000 miles, was in great condition and came with a full BMW history. It’s still original and apart from a brake overhaul hasn’t needed anything more than routine maintenance.

‘ The six-speed gearbox is a bit notchy compared to the 3.0’s, but it’s a very easy car to drive. The performance is strong but manageable, so it’s ideal for long journeys, too.’
