Jaguar opens new £7m classic works
Jaguar Land Rover has opened a new classic facility in Coventry, dedicated to sales servicing, and the restoration of classic Jaguars and Land Rovers.
The new works, said to be the largest facility of its kind, features a workshop with 54 servicing and repair bays. The JLR Classic Collection – a 500-strong selection of JLR’s back catalogue – will also be based there.
The workshop is separated into three zones – strip-down, remanufacturing, and assembly. Repair and maintenance is available for all models that have been out of production for ten years or more, with restoration prices negotiable with JLR.
The number of skilled staff employed by the classic business has risen 100 per cent since it was formed in March 2016, to support the need for traditional manufacturing skills. However, the classic operation will also use cutting-edge technology such as 3D scanning and Computer Aided Design, to allow re-tooling of parts for cars like the Jaguar E-type and Range Rover Classic.
JLR classic director, Tim Hannig, says: ‘Our people, their knowledge and their skills are the heart of Jaguar Land Rover Classic. There are more than 1.5 million classic Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles worldwide, and we are investing in traditional manufacturing and restoration skills to ensure that enthusiasts are able to give cars with a glorious past, a glorious future.’
1988 Le Mans winner, Andy Wallace, has been named as chief test driver – road testing reborn cars like the Jaguar E-type, D-type, and XKSS, before they are delivered to customers. Visitors and car clubs will also be able to visit and explore the new facility. Prices start from £49 for a three-hour tour, with tours starting in September.
JLR special operations managing director, John Edwards, says: ‘Classic Works is hugely important to Jaguar Land Rover. It’s much more than a building – it’s the heart, and soul, of Jaguar Land Rover Classic for our clients worldwide.
‘Being able to support owners and enthusiasts of our two great brands with a full suite of services for classic vehicles is a fantastic opportunity.’ experience.jaguar.com/classicworks-tour
