BUT I CAN AFFORD A VW BEETLE
DAVID BROWN An early Porsche 911 shares some of the Beetle ethic thanks to its rear-mounted, air-cooled engine. Ferdinand Porsche helped to design the people’s car and was responsible for early Beetle prototypes and development.
In 1947 the Porsche company designed a flat-four sports car that it called the 356, initially on a smallscale, hand-crafted production line. The larger 1960s replacement was designated project 901 until Peugeot pointed out that it had the rights to car names with a ‘0’ in the middle, so the 911 it became.
Even if a big lottery win is forthcoming, there will still not be sufficient funds within the accounts to pay for a deposit on a classic 911 that appears to increase in value by the hour. It’s perhaps as well the Beetle provides such a fun and inexpensive experience.
