BUT I CAN AFFORD AN AUDI TT
MURRAY SCULLION Audi’s UR quattro is a masterpiece. Motor sport fans like me are mesmerised by its history and offbeat five-cylinder wail – and £25k asking price. The TT, on the other hand, might not sound as good, but it ticks a lot of the boxes for a lot less money.
Simple man maths indicates that good ones can be had for between £2000 and £5000. The 1.8-litre turbo kicks out 221bhp, and it has four-wheel drive. That’s a lot of bang, blow and turbo whoosh for the money. The engine is a mere four-cylinder unit and lacks the charm of the original quattro’s five-cylinder, but, if you’re feeling brave the TT also comes in 3.2-litre V6 flavour.
If an UR is just a pipe dream at the moment, a TT is surprisingly similar on paper, at about one tenth of the price.
