LIVING DOLL, BY CLIFF RICHARD & THE DRIFTERS
The first Number One record for Cliff & The Drifters (Hank. Bruce, Jet and Tony would not become ‘The Shadows’ until later in the year) was the virtual soundtrack to the summer of 1959, spending six weeks at the top of the Hit Parade. The Lionel Bart composition was originally performed as a rock and roll number in the drama Serious Charge but the single’s version adopted a more country and western tempo. Meanwhile, the sort of music lover who also favoured sideburns and leather jackets infinitely preferred the records’ classic flipside, Dynamite, which blared from hundreds of jukeboxes throughout Brighton.
