The first Boe­ing 747 jumbo jet landed in the UK, as Pan Am Flight Two from New York into Heathrow on 22 Jan­uary. 324 pas­sen­gers made the trip, ar­riv­ing seven hours late. The flight back is only 4.5 hours late!

An in­aus­pi­cious start then…

The 1846-50-built Bri­tan­nia Bridge, de­signed by Robert Stephen­son and link­ing An­gle­sey with main­land Wales, is se­ri­ously dam­aged by a fire caused by kids play­ing on it. When re­built, the rail cross­ing loses its tubu­lar iron box sec­tions.
