Vauxhall world record
A huge effort to gather 50 Vauxhall FDs together to mark the cars’ half century was exceeded by eight examples at the Vauxhall Bedford Opel Association Rally at Market Harborough Showground, Leicestershire, last weekend.
Vauxhall FD Register chairman, Chris Parsons, said: ‘We are delighted. We didn’t think we would do it.
‘The cars weren’t all there for both days or in one place but on the Saturday afternoon we had 49 cars. We thought that would be it but then another car arrived to wild cheers. The drivers must have wondered what on earth was going on.’
The gathering was organised jointly by the Register and the Vauxhall VX4/90 Drivers Club. Cars came from as far afield as Switzerland.
The FD was built in Victor, Ventora and VX4/90 form from 1967-72, and in 1600 form featured a new OHC engine. Estates came in 1968 and engine options included a 2000cc engine and 3294cc straight-six.
Vauxhall provided an FD from its own collection for the event.
Held at the showground for the first time, the VBOA Rally attracted some 3500 cars and commercials. Nick Larkin VBOA Rally report, next week’s issue
