Delayed by the DVLA

Classic Car Weekly (UK) - - This Week -

Last week I purchased an MG from a private seller, which was taxed until the end of June. I drove it home apparently unlawfully as it was then illegal as the previous owner had notified the DVLA of the sale, giving my address.

Wanting to drive the car during the recent great hot weather I tried to tax the car online without the reference number of the new registration document. This was not possible, so I then spoke to the DVLA to tax the car and was told I wouldn’t be able to until they had received a new document in my name – which would take seven to ten days.

This is bureaucratic nonsense. Why isn’t it possible to tax a car immediately? And why does it take at least a week for Swansea to get its act together and send a new form, so that I can then tax online? Madness – I feel better having written in! ❚ Ian Roberts, by email
