In 2012, the Mini was voted ‘the great­est Bri­tish car of all time’ in an Au­to­car poll and its im­pact ex­tended far be­yond the UK, being made in Malta, Venezuela and Aus­tralia to name just a few coun­tries. In France through­out the 1960s ‘Le Mini Austin’ was the choice of all ur­ban­ites and in New Zealand, its fame was con­firmed by the cult film Good­bye Pork Pie. In Ja­pan, to quote one ex­pert, the Mini ‘has be­come part of our own cul­ture’ and per­haps the great­est trib­ute to Is­sigo­nis’ mas­ter­piece was how many cars around the globe it con­tin­ues to in­spire.
