The TR2 estab­lished the Tri­umph mar­que for gen­er­a­tions of US driv­ers who found that the prod­ucts of Chrysler, Ford and General Mo­tors were be­com­ing ‘too darned soft’ with their soft springs and au­to­matic trans­mis­sion. Its TR3 suc­ces­sor was equally suc­cess­ful across ‘ The Pond’ with 10,032 out of a pro­duc­tion run of 13,377 mod­els being sold abroad. 1961 marked the de­but of the TR4 but a ‘ TR3B’ con­tin­ued to be sold in the States un­til 1962; Tri­umph was con­cerned at the re­ac­tion of its tra­di­tional cus­tomer base to a sports car fit­ted with wind­ing win­dows…
