Take a tour with Gor­don Mur­ray

More than 40 iconic race and road cars from Gor­don Mur­ray’s ca­reer are be­ing gath­ered for a cel­e­bra­tion of the For­mula 1 de­signer’s 50 years in the in­dus­try this Novem­ber.

The his­tor­i­cally sig­nif­i­cant cars are to fea­ture in a ‘vir­tual ex­hi­bi­tion’, based in a brand-new fa­cil­ity at Dunsfold, Sur­rey – premises that will house Gor­don Mur­ray De­sign’s new head­quar­ters for au­to­mo­tive de­vel­op­ment and pro­duc­tion to­wards the end of the year.

From Novem­ber, en­thu­si­asts across the world will be able to take an on­line ‘tour’ of the ex­hibits and lis­ten to Mur­ray talk­ing about them. The col­lec­tion will en­com­pass al­most ev­ery car that Mur­ray has de­signed or in­flu­enced, in­clud­ing ground-break­ing Brab­ham and McLaren For­mula 1 rac­ers, McLaren road-go­ing su­per­cars, light­weight con­cepts, ad­vanced sports cars, one-off spe­cials and rad­i­cal city cars.

There will be a host of side dis­plays to pro­vide an in­sight into how th­ese de­signs have shaped the au­to­mo­tive world, as well as the many cul­tural in­spi­ra­tions for Mur­ray’s work over the decades.

South African-born Mur­ray says: ‘It will be a very proud and emo­tional day to see all th­ese cars brought to­gether, as they chart my pro­fes­sional life, as well as my per­spec­tive over the decades on com­plex chal­lenges in ve­hi­cle de­sign and en­gi­neer­ing. Mur­ray’s 1967 IGM Ford Spe­cial will be seen with his Brab­ham BT46B ‘Fan Car’ and the McLaren F1.
