All P4s have leather trim, so make sure it isn’t dam­aged, be­cause a full re­trim costs around £3000 and re­place­ment Wilton car­pets are £360 a set. The wood­work can also look tired, though the only ve­neered piece is the glove­box lid – it’s all solid African wal­nut oth­er­wise, so it’s rel­a­tively straight­for­ward to re­vive on a DIY ba­sis.

SAV­ING SER­VOS

The brak­ing sys­tem suf­fers from per­ished master cylin­der seals and sheared wheel cylin­der bleed nip­ples; P5 items go straight on and im­prove brak­ing. Ser­vos on post1956 P4s can suf­fer from per­ished seals, but re­build kits are avail­able. It’s not an easy job, so many own­ers opt for a re­built servo, which costs around £200.
