Derek Robin­son is born in Cradley Heath, Stafford­shire.

1941

Joins Austin as an ap­pren­tice tool­maker at Long­bridge.

1950

Be­comes a mem­ber of the Com­mu­nist Party of Great Bri­tain.

1975

Bank­rupt Bri­tish Ley­land is na­tion­alised and Robin­son be­comes union con­vener.

1977

Michael Ed­wardes is ap­pointed to head Bri­tish Ley­land, and in­sti­gates changes.

1979

Robin­son is dis­missed from BL af­ter re­fus­ing to dis­as­so­ci­ate him­self from a leaflet crit­i­cis­ing BL man­age­ment.

1979

AEWU’s call for an of­fi­cial strike in sup­port for Robin­son’s re­in­state­ment is re­jected 10 to 1.

1980

New work­ing prac­tices and agree­ments mean that the new Austin Metro is launched and a pe­riod of rel­a­tive suc­cess fol­lows.

2005

BL’s fi­nal rein­car­na­tion, MG Rover, col­lapses.
