Anglia answers at Goodwood

-

I was interested in Rob Forsdyke’s images of Graham Hill and the Ford Anglias (Your Letters, CCW, 7 March).

From the top picture it is definitely Goodwood Circuit, identified from the hills in the background, the Dunlop roof on the grandstand and the Lucas sign on top of the pits on the left.

The car registrations don’t have prefix letters, so the date is very early Sixties. As the cars have non-standard foglights was this some kind of 24-hour endurance event for the launch of the Anglia about that time, or the venue for a road run like the ‘ Tour of Britain’ in latter years?

The mechanics’ clean overalls in the top picture show that it was taken at the start of the event. The bottom left picture shows the white car a bit dirty, so taken at the end of the event. Also, it probably wasn’t a race as such, as the cars have standard wheels, not five and half J Lotus wheels.

The bottom right picture showing all the cars finishing together in a row with the chequered flag being waved also suggests an endurance event finish.

As for the three drivers, the middle guy looks a bit like Bruce McLaren but I feel this is unlikely. I can’t do a DVLA search on the cars as none of the registration numbers are completely visible due to extra lights hanging below the number plate.

Hope that helps! Peter Skipper, via email
