Classic Car Weekly (UK) - - BUYING & SELLING - PETER FOSTER

Peter is Vanguard Spares Officer for the Standard Motor Club, so he knows these cars well and has owned his 1959 Vanguard Vignale for around 15 years. He says: ‘My father owned Standards, including an Ensign De Luxe that I learned to drive in, so I’ve always had an affection for the marque. I had a particular hankering for a Phase 3, and found this one that had been owned by an elderly chap who could no longer drive.

‘He’d used it as an everyday car; it had been wellmaintained and was in sound condition. The engine had covered 200,000 miles and had been overhauled previously, and apart from some work I carried out on the cylinder head, it’s still going strong. I’ve also had the gearbox overhauled, but otherwise it’s just needed some attention to the bodywork.

‘It needed a fair bit of welding around the A-pillars, a few years ago, because they were getting a bit frilly, and I’ve replaced the front wings and sills and repainted the bottom half of the car.

‘I love the looks, and these are very comfortable cars that have no trouble keeping up with modern traffic.’
