Ayrton Senna – The Last Night
By Ercole Columbo & Giorgio Terruzzi, £34.95, skira.net, ISBN 978 88 572 3153 2 A picture tells a thousand words, so the cliché says, but photographer Columbo’s book manages to live up to it. Although it’s furnished entirely by photos taken at racetracks, this is a book about emotion. Columbo’s lens followed Ayrton Senna’s career intimately, focusing on facial expressions, gestures and interactions with friends, foes and colleagues as well as on-track action.
Combined with Giorgio Terruzzi’s neatly-judged captions, the book is in effect a biography with few words, Something you move through with the slow, considered deliberation of an art exhibition at a gallery – motor sport photography at its best.
