CRMC DONINGTON PARK CLASSIC FESTIVAL
This year’s sun-baked Donington Park Festival produced three days of flat-out action, with a full programme of CRMC championship races (combined with the FIM Europe Vintage Championship), two ACU UK rounds (including Sunday’s Classic Racer- sponsored Wheatcroft Trophy) and four Lansdowne races. On top of all that there were club parades and a fabulous display of special race machines, many of which took to the track on Saturday/sunday. Enjoying the fun along with the large crowds were Alex George, Stan Woods, Charlie Williams, Jim Curry, Mick Grant and guest of honour, Steve Parrish. Our own rather less esteemed duo of former racers, Graham Lawlor and Russ Lee, were also there to bring you the story of what was a terrific event.
Look closely and you’ll see that Hudson Kennaugh (TZ350) has just lost his chain on lap six of the Wheatcroft Trophy race.the South African was battling for the lead when the chain let go exiting Robert’s Chicane.
Podium for the Classic Racer/ Hercberg International/acu Post Classic race. Left to right: Alex George; runner-up Danny Imberg (Yamaha FZ750); winner Joe Barton (Minnovation Kawasaki 1260); Phil Atkinson (third, TZ350) and Steve Parrish. The win completed a fantastic weekend for Barton, who as well as leading the championship also lifted the Wheatcroft Trophy and collected £500 of the £1,000 prize fund provided by Classic Racer.
Above: One of the best races of the weekend was John Warwick’s (58,Yamaha FZ600) victory over Kev Wholey (31, FZ600) in Friday’s opening Junior Production race. Later that day, however, Wholey crashed heavily from his TZ350 and is now looking at a lengthy recovery following elbow surgery.
Above: Joe Barton (Minnovation G50) at speed on his way to a narrow victory over Richard Molnar (Molnar Manx) in Saturday’s Minnovation/acu Classic 500 race. With two rounds to go, the Wakefield rider now leads both the Classic and Post Classic ACU UK championships.
