Enhanced skies of blue and seas of green.

Returning to the big screen for its 50th anniversary, The Beatles’ fanciful psych-lite fable is unlikely to blow many minds among millennials who grew up in a post-Pixar digital landscape. It’s nowhere near as trippy as the animation giant’s Oscar-winning Coco, but its bygone-era quaintness is arguably part of its charm – along with the soundtrack of a dozen or so tried-and-tested Fab Four bangers.

In truth, the band had little to do with the film, but director George Dunning neatly captures the notion of The Beatles as conquering heroes, saving Pepperland from the scourge of the Blue Meanies.

A wealth of corny gags echo the exploits of A Hard Day’s

Night and Help!, although the main draw are the eyepopping – and now digitally remastered – visuals, aligned to slick surround sound: It’s All Too Much and Hey Bulldog, among four tracks premiered in the film, have never sounded better.

It may struggle to win legions of newcomers, but for pop kids of a certain age, it’s a welcome chance to wallow in thrilling and exuberant nostalgia.
