Plaque is due to the build up of bacteria on the teeth, while stains come from pigments in food and drink. Enamel and dentine can also be naturally yellow in colour. Clinics whiten teeth by using hydrogen peroxide to bleach the tooth, eliminating stains and changing the colour of the dentine and enamel.
