THE MYSTERY OF THEIR FIVE-YEAR DATING BAN
Reports that Katie Holmes and Jamie Foxx were dating first surfaced in 2013, but it appeared the couple went out of their way to avoid being pictured – with varying degrees of success.
And last week, reports emerged the actress was legally bound to keep her love life out of the public eye. According to reports, clauses in her divorce settlement from Tom Cruise meant particular aspects of Katie’s life would be covered by strict terms and conditions for five years. As well as being unable to date publicly until 2017, she was allegedly also barred from talking about Tom, or Scientology, or embarrassing him in any way.
Family lawyer Kim Aucott, from Slater Heelis LLP in Manchester, deals with divorce cases. She says: “If this five-year plan is true, it would have been done behind closed doors. It’s not a settlement that has been imposed on them by a court – as far as I’m aware you can’t do this legally. I would expect, in order for Katie to have agreed to a clause like that, there must have been some benefit to her, be it financial or otherwise. I can’t see why you would agree to something like that when life does move on after a divorce – but there is nothing stopping couples forming a private agreement themselves either before they get married or after they’ve separated.”
