How to control your home with Alexa
We show you how to add, control and manage your smart devices using Amazon’s Alexa
Using Alexa to control your smart home is straightforward and easy once you know all of the tricks. To follow this guide, you’ll need an Echo device and a compatible smart home device. We’re using Philips Hue light bulbs for this demonstration. 1 ADD YOUR SKILL
Open the Alexa app and tap the menu bar (three horizontal buttons) and then Smart Home. Tap Smart Home Skills and select Enable Skills. Scroll through the list or use the search bar to find the Skill you want. 2 ENABLE SKILL
Tap your selected Skill and choose Enable. At the login page, enter your authentication details for your chosen service. Follow the instructions to authorise Alexa. When complete, you’ll see a message saying you can close the window, so tap the ‘X’ icon. Alexa will now prompt you to discover which devices you have on your home network, so tap Discover.
3 USE YOUR DEVICES
You’ll see a list of devices in the app, and you can now control them using your voice. Commands are mostly intuitive, such as ‘turn on office light’, ‘set office light to 50%’ and so on. Search Google for your product name plus Alexa commands to find more detailed information. 4 CREATE GROUPS
You can control multiple devices at once by grouping them together. To do this, go to the Smart Home section of the Alexa app and select Groups. Tap Create Group and select Device Group. Use the selection boxes to choose the devices you want. It makes sense to group together similar devices, as it makes control easier. Choose Save, which is right at the bottom of the list. You can now control all your selected devices together. 5 MANAGE DEVICES
To manage devices, go to Smart Home and tap Devices. Next to any device, you can tap Forget and then Forget again, and Alexa will no longer control that product. You can’t rename devices or give them a different nickname from the Alexa app. To change a device’s name, go into the native app, such as the Hue app, and rename from there. To get Alexa to rediscover your smart home kit, say, “Alexa, discover”.
