Pick of Cornwall’s spas
Whether you’re looking for a luxury beach-side spa to celebrate a special occasion or are just after somewhere to leave the kids for half an hour while you enjoy a quick massage, Cornwall’s spa offerings cover all bases. Here’s The Good Spa Guide’s cream of the crop
C BAY SPA AT CARBIS BAY HOTEL AND SPA
Good Spa Guide Rating: 5 Bubbles
Whether you’re swimming laps in the outdoor heated pool while watching people stroll along the beach, eating a delectable lunch in an open-air pavilion (overlooking said pool) or relaxing in the hands of an expertly-trained spa therapist, C-Side at Carbis Bay won’t disappoint. Enjoy a VOYA treatment, bubble away in the hydro-pool or a glass of bubbly on a lounger while staring at the ocean. The hotel itself is a whitewashed institution, with sumptuous rooms and a 2 AA rosette restaurant. New for this year are the Beach Lodges, eight luxury rooms housed in a separate wooden annexe right on the sand. Any closer and you’d be in the sea…
THE HEADLAND SPA
Good Spa Guide Rating: 5 Bubbles
Situated on the top of a rocky outcrop, The Headland is a handsome red-brick property overlooking Fistral Bay with a 2 AA rosette restaurant, tennis courts and a spa. The spa, situated down a spiral staircase, is a modern contrast to the rest of the hotel, with its light and airy design featuring white tree bark. Thermal facilities include a 12-metre indoor pool, a sunken circular Jacuzzi (where a spa butler will come and take your drinks order) and a Cornish Salt steam room. The oversized sauna seats 12 people. Treatments are brought to you by the house of Elemis – we loved our Headland Marine Ritual from Natural Spa Factory.
ESYA SPA AT RETALLACK RESORT
Good Spa Guide Rating: 4 Bubbles
There aren’t many places in the UK where you can safely leave your children while you enjoy a spa treatment – Retallack
Resort is one. Set on a lake near the popular town of Padstow, this upscale holiday village features luxury self-catering villas, a waterpark where you can do watersports, a fitness centre, a restaurant and bar and a 4 Bubble spa. Treatments, brought to you by Elemis, are good value compared to other spas in the area, with anything from facials to massages on the menu. There’s also a 15-metre indoor pool, a Eucalyptus-scented sauna, a mood-lit steam room, a relaxation room, a nail bar and a spa shop.
THE SCARLET SPA
Good Spa Guide rating: 5 Bubbles
Imagine basking in your own private clifftop hot-tub, gazing out at the wild Atlantic seas or up at the star-studded skies – and being able to do so with a clean green conscience. The Scarlet is the ultimate in eco luxe; a stylishly positioned hotel on Mawgon Porth Beach with huge windows allowing you to absorb its stunning views. The spa was well ahead of the wellness trend and offers holistic treatments in lamplit tents drawing on the wisdom of Ayurveda with a Cornish twist. There’s a low-bromide indoor pool, but also an outdoor natural pool filtered by reeds, as well as a Hammam, Rhassoul and a Copper Tub. After your spa journey, curl up in a hanging cocoon bed in the relaxation room.
THE CLEARING SPA AT THE CORNWALL HOTEL Good Spa Guide Rating: 4 Bubbles
The Clearing Spa is surrounded by 43 acres of woodland on a picturesque Cornwall estate. Floor-to-ceiling windows showcase their pretty walled garden and the countryside beyond. The infinity pool is the jewel in the crown, jutting out onto the view so it feels as though you are swimming in nature. There is also a bubble pool, a sauna and aroma steam room, drench showers, plus a manicure and pedicure bar using Jessica products. After enjoying the heat facilities or draping yourself around the pool and gardens, enjoy an Aromatherapy Associates treatment. If you fancy a work out with your spa day, you can use the fitness suite which opens out onto the attractive courtyard, then rejuvenate with a smoothie in the juice bar.
