Predicting a good sunset

Cornwall Life - - CAPTURING CORNWALL -

Is it possible to predict a good sunset or sunrise?

Well, probably not. But there are signs to look out for. I frequently watch the weather forecast when planning a photo shoot. When looking for good weather at sunset it’s good if a weather front is just passing over at the time as the sun sets. This can provide a bank of cloud overhead and a clear patch for the sun to set into; the idea being that the setting sun will then light up the underside of the cloud.

By the same theory a sunrise might be best when a front is approaching.

High level cloud tends to give best colour, so look for evenings with thin wispy high cloud or ‘mackerel’ skies.
