Walk this way

We all know that gardening is good for the soul - but at the Eden Project it’s also good for body and mind

Cornwall Life - - A DAY IN PARADISE -

patient has attended every week for seven years, so they’re definitely more fun than hard work! In fine weather the walks range across the whole Eden site, and when it rains or snows we have a handy couple of Biomes for alternative routes.

And it works. We collect data on how our walkers get on, and we know that they have to visit hospital or surgeries less often, lose weight, are able to come off oxygen, and in general have better quality of life. They also make friends – the programme works in part because it has created new gangs of pals meeting up every week.

Eden thinks big, of course, so now we’re trying to influence the NHS right across the UK to adopt walking for health – so where it’s appropriate, GPs start to prescribe going for regular walks with good company and in beautiful places. You might be wondering what this has to do with Eden – well we’re all about connecting people with nature, and we think everyone’s wellbeing is inextricably linked with spending time outdoors and enjoying the living world. One longstanding member of the group said, “I feel that it has opened up possibilities for all of us to get out and do more with people with similar conditions, and has certainly helped to make me more aware of the value of exercise in congenial surroundings, in all kinds of weather! I wonder how I might have managed without such encouraging facilities, so thank you Eden!”
