PUTTING YOUNG CUSTOMERS BEFORE PROFIT

Sir, I was delighted to see that Cheltenham Racecourse and the Jockey Club are launching initiatives to interest youngsters in racing A Badge of Belonging, Cotswold Life, July).

Too many sports have excluded young people in favour of more profitable customers. Despite the enormous amounts of TV money pumped into football, ticket prices have consistently increased and corporate needs take precedence. Similarly cricket is suddenly realising that the loss of school playing fields and the cost of actually attending a Test match means that interest is dwindling amongst the young.

Racing is embracing this problem and making sure that we have a steady supply of racegoers in the years to come. April Baddeley Cheltenham

SUE PLAYS HER TRUMP CARD

Sir, I cannot praise Sue Limb highly enough for her devastating takedown of the preposterous Donald Trump in her column (Cotswold Life, July).

As well as highlighting his stupidity and massive ego, it was also very, very funny – often the best way to unsettle those in power.

Keep up the good work, Sue. Alison Morris Staverton

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST

Sir, Adam Edwards rightly sums up the level of debate at the lowest level of our local parish and village councils – moving the start time of the meeting to avoid a clash with The Archers Omnibus while still seeing attendees in the pub by noon – but they still do have an important local voice.

Without this input we would be left in the hands of the dreaded Cotswold District Council, whose answer to the problem of poor ambulance response times – as detailed in Adam’s column – is to bung every remote village £2,000 to buy a defribrilator and leave us to get on with it.
