Don’t confuse the relaxed atmosphere of the MODE salon with sleepy or out of town. The salon in the heart of the Cotswold countryside is very much urban chic

Cotswold Life - - CUMMINGS’ GOINGS -

You won’t find MODE in the high street. Ten years ago when Martin Crean decided to open his own business he took the courageous decision to create his salon just outside Chipping Campden in the rolling Cotswolds hills. The result is a breath-taking barn conversion flooded with natural light and panoramic views of the countryside. It is a spa break for hair.

While Martin has the professional credentials to run a top salon in London, he chose the Cotswolds, his home. A stylist with 17 years’ experience Martin has this year been selected to judge the hairdressing industry’s equivalent of the Oscars. For him it is the culmination of a glittering career in which he has twice been named British Hairdresser of the Year for Wales & South West England. The awards, which are sponsored by Schwarzkopf Professional and run by Hairdressers Journal International, highlight the best talent in the British hairdressing industry.

Martin is passionate about the creativity of hairdressing and how that good hair experience can dramatically change people’s attitudes towards themselves. He enjoys the interaction with clients and gets a deep satisfaction of seeing a client leave the salon with a smile and feeling good about themselves.

It is simply not the styling that Martin finds exciting. He relishes the challenge of transforming the condition of clients’ hair – another reason why he enjoys working with clients over long periods of time and creating a

unique level of rapport and trust. Those beliefs and passions are at the heart of MODE and Martin is committed to passing on his experience, beliefs and expertise through ongoing training and education.

The MODE team put the client at the centre of everything they do. For them that relationships with the client is crucial. That personal welcome starts when you are greeted by Jenny, Salon Manager, who makes every client feel like a VIP, without the London prices. The high level of service is second to none.

MODE provides free consultations which are non-obligatory. Martin is adamant that the customer must feel comfortable with the stylist, that they make the connection. “We love it when people bring in pictures of hairstyles they would like, it shows us their inspirations and their future vision for their look,” Martin explains.

“Their choice of hairstyle often reflects the lifestyle they would like to achieve and we can help adapt the style to suit both their look and lifestyle in terms of maintaining the cut and colour until their next visit.” Unlike a high street salon, there are no parking stresses as MODE provides an extensive car park, without the worry of parking tickets or putting enough money in the meter.

There are three Artistic Directors at MODE: Martene, Nikki and Ali along with Senior Stylist Claire and Stylist Ben. MODE is very serious about the quality and skills of all its stylists. There is mentoring and ongoing training to maintain the high quality Martin and MODE have become renown for. The long-term health of hair is important and MODE exclusively uses Kerastase and Schwarzkopf products.

It is the sum of the total experience which ensures customers leave feeling fabulous. From the relaxing massage chair while having your hair washed to the enjoyable conversations with the MODE team and the incredible high standard of hairdressing. And all of this with the stunning backdrop of the Cotswold countryside. The proof of the any salon is whether clients return. Not only does MODE retain an very high level of their clients, they travel from London, and as far as Devon and Yorkshire. They know that a high quality salon is worth travelling for.

“The MODE team put the client at the centre of everything they do”
