You won’t find MODE in the high street. Ten years ago when Martin Crean de­cided to open his own busi­ness he took the coura­geous de­ci­sion to cre­ate his sa­lon just out­side Chip­ping Cam­p­den in the rolling Cotswolds hills. The re­sult is a breath-tak­ing barn con­ver­sion flooded with nat­u­ral light and panoramic views of the coun­try­side. It is a spa break for hair.

While Martin has the pro­fes­sional cre­den­tials to run a top sa­lon in Lon­don, he chose the Cotswolds, his home. A stylist with 17 years’ ex­pe­ri­ence Martin has this year been se­lected to judge the hair­dress­ing in­dus­try’s equiv­a­lent of the Os­cars. For him it is the cul­mi­na­tion of a glit­ter­ing ca­reer in which he has twice been named Bri­tish Hair­dresser of the Year for Wales & South West Eng­land. The awards, which are spon­sored by Sch­warzkopf Pro­fes­sional and run by Hair­dressers Jour­nal In­ter­na­tional, high­light the best ta­lent in the Bri­tish hair­dress­ing in­dus­try.

Martin is pas­sion­ate about the cre­ativ­ity of hair­dress­ing and how that good hair ex­pe­ri­ence can dra­mat­i­cally change peo­ple’s at­ti­tudes to­wards them­selves. He en­joys the in­ter­ac­tion with clients and gets a deep sat­is­fac­tion of see­ing a client leave the sa­lon with a smile and feel­ing good about them­selves.

It is sim­ply not the styling that Martin finds ex­cit­ing. He rel­ishes the chal­lenge of trans­form­ing the con­di­tion of clients’ hair – another rea­son why he en­joys work­ing with clients over long pe­ri­ods of time and cre­at­ing a

unique level of rap­port and trust. Those be­liefs and pas­sions are at the heart of MODE and Martin is com­mit­ted to pass­ing on his ex­pe­ri­ence, be­liefs and ex­per­tise through on­go­ing train­ing and ed­u­ca­tion.

MODE pro­vides free con­sul­ta­tions which are non-oblig­a­tory. Martin is adamant that the cus­tomer must feel com­fort­able with the stylist, that they make the con­nec­tion. “We love it when peo­ple bring in pic­tures of hair­styles they would like, it shows us their in­spi­ra­tions and their fu­ture vi­sion for their look,” Martin ex­plains.

“Their choice of hair­style of­ten re­flects the lifestyle they would like to achieve and we can help adapt the style to suit both their look and lifestyle in terms of main­tain­ing the cut and colour un­til their next visit.” Un­like a high street sa­lon, there are no park­ing stresses as MODE pro­vides an ex­ten­sive car park, with­out the worry of park­ing tick­ets or putting enough money in the me­ter.

There are three Artis­tic Di­rec­tors at MODE: Martene, Nikki and Ali along with Se­nior Stylist Claire and Stylist Ben. MODE is very se­ri­ous about the qual­ity and skills of all its stylists. There is men­tor­ing and on­go­ing train­ing to main­tain the high qual­ity Martin and MODE have be­come renown for. The long-term health of hair is im­por­tant and MODE ex­clu­sively uses Keras­tase and Sch­warzkopf prod­ucts.

It is the sum of the to­tal ex­pe­ri­ence which en­sures cus­tomers leave feel­ing fab­u­lous.
