Janina Ramirez Abbey Life Uncovered What was life really like at a Medieval Abbey? To celebrate the 900th anniversary of Cirencester’s Abbey of St Mary, audiences are being offered an entertaining insight into the role the Abbey played in everyday city life. How did the monks live? What did they eat? How did they help the townsfolk? Oxford historian Janina Ramirez, presenter of BBC Four’s Saints and Sinners: Britain’s Millennium of Monasteries and with Alastair Sooke An Art Lovers’ Guide, lifts the lid on monastic life to show a reality rather different from what we often think.

Guy de la Bédoyère Praetorian: Rome’s Imperial Bodyguard One of Britain’s leading historians Guy de la Bédoyère is author of a widely-admired series of books on Roman history and has appeared on programmes including Channel 4’s Time Team and Channel 5’s Pompeii Live. His critically-acclaimed new book tells the story of the Praetorian Guard who defended the Roman Emperors from Augustus to Constantine, exploring the history of Imperial Rome through their eyes. Vivid and accessible – and told with clarity and panache – Guy’s story of the Praetorian Guard is ‘warmly recommended both to aspiring tyrants and the ordinary armchair historian.’
