The Big Picture:
Barn Owl by Stuart Philpott
As the sun sets on a gorgeous March day which has been almost cloudless, a huge storm rolled in just as one of our Cotswold barn owls started out early hunting. Fortunately, he landed besides us before trying to catch his supper. Barn owls don’t like the rain; their feathers are not very waterproof, an adaptation for silence probably, so this might be him predicting what is about to arrive. A wonderful encounter in some stunning light, and that quite unusual backdrop of dark storm clouds... so rare to get all these things together at one time, especially with a truly wild owl!
