Nikki Hollier, Border in a Box
Gardening was always a respite from corporate life for Nikki Hollier, who lives in Pershore in Worcestershire, with a garden dotted with tulips, her favourite flower. ‘I spent 20 years in IT and had some great experiences,’ she says, ‘but at times I suffered badly from stress and the garden acted as my healer.’
In search of a change of pace, in 2014 Nikki left her job to study horticulture at a local college. With budding confidence, she entered the RHS Spring Festival Show in Malvern and was thrilled to win the Silver Award. Nikki now had the inspired idea of creating garden kits for owners of new-build homes. ‘When you buy a new house, often you’re faced with a boring patch of turf, about the size of a stamp! I know, having owned one myself,’ she says.
The kits take the hard work out of deciding what to plant, and where, offering templates and plant lists to suit different conditions. To fund the idea, Nikki had to sell her home and downsize, but has no regrets. ‘I’m thrilled to win,’ she says. ‘To receive a pat on the back for all my hard work is wonderful.’
