Pond skater

(Gerris lacustris) about a half to five-eighths of an inch long

Also known as the Jesus bug because of its ability to walk on water, the pond skater achieves this miraculous feat due to clever weight distribution and the millions of miniscule hairs that cover its thin, brown body and long, gangly legs. Alerted to its prey by vibrations through the water, this agile and active predator—which quickly descends upon and grabs victims with its mantis-like front legs—evades capture itself by jumping and flying.
