Unflattering lighting

Country Life Every Week - - Letters To The Editor -

THE Athena article on unsuitable street lighting ( July 20) made interesting reading. I would like to add that, here in Northamptonshire, there is wholesale replacement of street lighting in hand. Apparently, this is to install more economic lighting. Unlike the simple change to low-wattage bulbs in our homes, this involves excavation, installation of new standards, reconnection to the supply, removal of existing standards and making good of the roadway. Teams of men have been carrying out this work for some months and the cost must run into hundreds of thousands of pounds. The resulting poles stand out like sore thumbs. I wonder just how long the payback period will be. Ken and Sheila Simpson, by email
