ALT HOUGH I agree with Rich Bar­nett ( Let­ters, July 13) that the early Bris­tol cars were bet­ter than the As­ton Martins of the same vin­tage, they were not, in fact, a Bri­tish de­sign—they were by BMW. The Ger­man com­pany had planned to build the cars as the 1940 ver­sion of its 300 se­ries, but was di­verted to war pro­duc­tion. The de­sign was then ‘ac­quired’ at the end of the Sec­ond World War and handed to the Bris­tol Avi­a­tion Com­pany, which didn’t even bother to change the dis­tinc­tive BMW ra­di­a­tor grille.
