Pick of the week
As I have mentioned before, traditional paintings tend to do well in troubled times and there was evidence for this during London Art Week. Johnny van Haeften, the Duke Street specialist in Dutch works, not only sold 17th-century still-lifes, but also two works in a similar vein by the contemporary Chinese painter Song Yu with asking prices of € 55,000 and € 25,000. Undoubtedly, they benefited from the association.
Elsewhere, Colnaghi sold the 45in by 311∕ 2in Philosopher holding a Mirror ( above) by Jusepe Ribera, Lo Spagnoletto (1591–1652) for a price in the region of £1.25 million.
