Sound the bugles!

Country Life Every Week - - Letters To The Editor -

IN response to your article on bugles ( May 18), my father, Ben Oakley, orphaned as a very young child, was sent to Kneller Hall, the army school of music, and became a proficient musician. At the age of 16, he was chosen to play the Last Post at Lord Roberts’s funeral, standing alone in the high gallery of St Paul’s Cathedral. His father had been, I believe, the first man to die in the Boer War; there is a plaque in Newcastle Cathedral in his memory.

My father became a member of the Royal Artillery Band, eventually leaving to start his own dance band and orchestra. I believe his party piece was the Post Horn Gallop. Pamela Gunnell, Lincolnshire
