A country milestone

Country Life Every Week - - Letters To The Editor -

THE winning letter on the wonderfully varied Letters page of August 17 was about old signposts, which struck a chord. Although I’m now retired, a lifetime working in the refrigeration industry has taken me on the roads to all parts of the UK.

The sight and condition of milestones on my travels prompted the idea of a National Milestone Day, on which local groups, societies and volunteers could bring them back to life. An elderly, but historic milestone about 200 yards from our home in Cheadle, Cheshire, has been almost swallowed by the hedge in front of which it once stood. Is it now time to restore local history to a prominent and visible level for children in the future? COUNTRY LIFE readers could provide a perfect sounding board. George R. Ayres, Cheshire
