Green tiger beetle

Cicindela campestris, about half an inch long

This lime-green beetle is the Usain Bolt of the insect world, capable of covering 24in a second as it scuttles over sandy terrain found in its favoured territory of dry heaths and dunes. Its superlative speed, large eyes and powerful jaws make it a ferocious predator of ants and caterpillars. Simon Lester
