THIS sea­son’s crime nov­els and thrillers di­vide neatly into ex­actly those two cat­e­gories, says The crime crop tends to be set in out-of-the-way places—the Shet­lands, Si­cily, tra­di­tional Ire­land, eerie salt­marshes—and most of the thrillers are by distin­guished au­thors who have ex­pe­ri­enced what they’re writ­ing about—no­tably Stella Rim­ing­ton, for­merly of MI5, and MI6 grad­u­ate Charles Cum­ming. Alan Furst is, of course, in a league of his own.
