NORTH YORKSHIRE group is fighting back against the menace of off-road vehicles causing ruts in paths. The North York Moors Green Lanes Alliance (NYMGLA) was set up last month as a forum for walkers, riders and cyclists who come across impassable and damaged routes in the national park and follows similar groups in the Yorkshire Dales and the Peak District. North Yorkshire County Council is taking the problem seriously and has announced an 18month ban for motorised vehicles on a popular route that runs from Lowna, near Hutton-le-hole, to Rawson Syke and which had become a ‘quagmire’. Clive Proctor of the NYMGLA warns that, of the 201 unsealed routes in the park, 165 have been classified as ‘highly vulnerable’. He would like many routes to be downgraded to footpaths and bridleways and vehicles banned completely. CC
