What was, or perhaps even is, the Athenry Club? In a late-june sale at Mallams, Oxford, there was a gold medallion dated 1729 and engraved with ‘Prosperity to Galway’, a hunting scene and clasped hands, presented by the club to John Blakeney Esq. The catalogue identified him as an Irish soldier, High Sheriff and MP (about 1729–89), who fought at Culloden and Havana, but the date means that it must have been his father and namesake (about 1703–47), also High Sheriff and MP. It sold for £2,356.
